OPEN’s 5th Annual Global Community Survey is now live!

Five years ago, we launched our first Community Survey with a simple goal: to understand the real experiences of non-monogamous people around the world. What started as a small effort to gather 500 responses has grown into one of the largest ongoing studies of our community, with over 5,800 participants from 65 countries in 2025 alone.

The data you've shared with us hasn't just sat in a report somewhere – it's driven real change. When OPEN testified before city councils in Seattle and Portland, we brought research results. When we talk to reporters, we share the evidence you've provided. When we develop resources for workplaces or write policy recommendations, we're guided by what you've told us about your actual experiences.

A quick message from David Carlson, Campaign Director:

Friends, I am excited to lead this year’s OPEN Annual Community Survey because we will dive deeper into our lived experiences by focusing on how instances of stigma and discrimination impact our lives. Moving forward, on odd numbered years, the general survey will be conducted, while every even year, we will choose a new area of life to deep dive into. It’s a privilege to work with Amy C. Moors and our team of analysts to bring you a thoughtful, insightful survey that will directly support the work I do every day with local advocates across the country. Your lived experience will impact the way city councilors and legislators understand our community. Our survey data directly swayed opinion in Portland, Oregon and it will make a difference in cities and states to come. You make a difference when you raise your voice and I’m honored to uplift your experiences.

Ready to Participate?

The 2026 survey builds on what we've learned while expanding into new areas that matter to our community. We are seeking volunteers to take part in the study who are 18+ years old, identify with consensual non-monogamy, and can complete an online survey study in English. This anonymous survey takes about 25-30 minutes and covers topics of identity, interpersonal interactions, experiences in various settings, and more.

Whether you practice polyamory, open relationships, swinging, relationship anarchy, or any other form of consensual non-monogamy, your perspective is welcomed. Please note, no identifying information will be collected (e.g., no names, email addresses, IP addresses). As in any data collection, while we make every effort to keep your study data confidential, there is always a risk of a breach of confidentiality

Chapman University's Institutional Review Board has approved this study (IRB No. 26-13). If you have questions about the research methodology, you can contact Dr. Moors at moors@chapman.edu. For any IRB-related concerns, contact Chapman IRB at (714) 628-2833 or irb@chapman.edu.
