Open Workplaces Initiative

The Open Workplaces Initiative aims to advance inclusion and acceptance for non-monogamous employees in the workplace through workplace policy and community-building

No one should have to hide their identity in the workplace for fear of stigma and discrimination. Unfortunately, that’s an all-too-common experience for non-monogamous professionals. From OPEN’s 2024 Community Survey, 9.5% of respondents reported experiencing stigma or discrimination in the workplace on the basis of their non-monogamous identity, up to and including loss of employment – and because “relationship structure” is not a protected status, this discrimination is entirely legal.

That’s why OPEN launched the Open Workplaces Initiative to help employees advocate for – and employers implement – policies to promote acceptance and inclusion for diverse family and relationship structures in the workplace.

This includes:

  • Non-discrimination hiring and employment policies.

  • Inclusive language for diverse family and relationship structures.

  • Accommodating medical and family leave policies.
