Fighting for the freedom to be open about everyone you love.

No one should face discrimination on the basis of their intimate relationships or family structure. That's why we’re working with grassroots leaders to push for non-discrimination ordinances that protect people of all relationship styles, including non-monogamy.

Today, only 18% of families fit the “traditional” model of two married parents with kids. Meanwhile, millions of families and chosen families who don’t fit this mold face discrimination in housing, employment, services, and more. By passing non-discrimination ordinances, we can ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their relationship structure.

In 2023, the cities of Somerville and Cambridge, MA became the first US cities to introduce nondiscrimination protections on the basis of family or relationship structure. In 2024, as the result of OPEN’s advocacy efforts, Oakland and Berkeley, CA became the first cities on the US West Coast to introduce these protections as well.

Today, OPEN is working with a grassroots coalition to introduce non-discrimination ordinances in more cities across the US. We’re also building tools and programs to help community members like you advocate for protections where you live.
